according to wikipedia: "It is an igneous intrusion or laccolith located in the Black Hills in northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises dramatically 1,267 feet above the surrounding terrain and the summit is 5,112 feet above sea level. It was featured in the movie Close Encounters with the Third Kind from the 70s."
according to me: this was one of the quick stops my family made on one of our excursions. it’s doesn’t seem all that exciting but in comparison to the barren plains that surround it, it looks way out of place. not only that, but it’s enormous, like a freakishly gigantic tree trunk just plopped in the middle of no where. apparently people climb it, which is probably pretty incredible once you reach the top.
